I am Professor of New Urban Tourism at Inholland University of Applied Sciences in Rotterdam and have been involved in sustainable tourism for over 25 years. My work focuses on the transition of urban tourism towards greater sustainability and resilience, exploring topics such as overtourism, city hospitality, regenerative place development, citizen engagement and bottom up governance practices and the complexities of inequalities in tourism.
I am the author of the UNWTO report on overtourism and editor of the books Slum Tourism: Poverty, Power and Ethics and Tourism and Geographies of Inequality: The New Global Slumming Phenomenon and am co-author of the report Transitional Tourism: Rethinking tourism in an age of systemic change. Additionally, I publish in a different academic journals.
I have led multiple European research projects, including JPI Urban Europe and H2020 initiatives and have facilitated a range co-creation processes on local, national and European levels
I also actively participate in the ENOLL accredited Inholland Urban Leisure and Tourism Lab (ULT-lab) across Rotterdam and Amsterdam, which focuses on fostering resident engagement and collaborative bottom-up participation for tourism development.
